2003/07/01 Opening Ceremony and Commemoration Lecture

   The opening ceremony for the Center for Grid Research and Development accompanied with a commemoration lecture was held at Gakushi Kaikan in Tokyo on July 1, 2003. 

   At the opening ceremony, Dr. Yasuharu Suematsu, Director General of the National Institute of Informatics made an opening speech to over 200 participants from industry academia and government. Then, Mr. Akira Ishikawa, Chief of the Research Promotion Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and Mr. Michio Fujisaki, Chief Technology Officer of Fujitsu Limited, gave words of congratulations. After these speeches, Dr. Kenichi Miura, Project Leader of NAREGI Project and Visiting Professor of National Institute of Informatics, presented a general description of the project.
   Dr. William E. Johnston, Chief Architect of the NASA’s Information Power Grid Project (IPG), a world-recognized researcher in grid technology, was invited to give a very impressive commemoration lecture titled “Computing and Data Grids for Science and Engineering”.
